Jose Guadalupe Lopez-Zamora, Fentanyl Smuggling, California 2024

GRIMY NEWS: Two Sacramento drug trafficking kingpins have been sentenced to decades in prison for their role in a massive fentanyl smuggling operation. Jose Guadalupe Lopez-Zamora, 30, was handed a 27-year sentence for leading the ring that imported and distributed tens of thousands of deadly fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills. Joaquin Alberto Sotelo Valdez, 28, received a 10-year sentence.

Lopez-Zamora, dubbed the leader of the organization, faces charges including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine, along with multiple distribution and possession counts. His associate, Sotelo Valdez, was also charged with conspiracy and possession of fentanyl.

According to court documents, Lopez-Zamora’s gang imported counterfeit ‘M-30’ oxycodone pills from Mexico between May 2019 and January 2021, distributing them across northern California. The group also dealt in cocaine and methamphetamine.

The sentencing of the two came after a thorough investigation by multiple federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), FBI, ATF, and U.S. Marshals Service. Fourteen other co-defendants have already pleaded guilty, with sentences ranging from 19 months to over a decade.

This operation was targeted by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), which utilizes a multi-agency approach to dismantle major criminal organizations. Assistant U.S. Attorney David W. Spencer is leading the prosecution of this case.

The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs collaborated with Mexican authorities to extradite Luis Lopez Zamora, ensuring he faces justice in the United States.
