SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The grim reaper of greed has struck again in Sacramento County as Michael Andrew Scott, 38, from Fair Oaks, faces a four-count indictment for wire fraud, according to U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
The federal grand jury’s wrath was unleashed on April 25, 2024, after unsealing the charges against Scott following his arrest. The defendant, whose name echoes the sinister nature of his crime, is accused of swindling investors out of their hard-earned cash with a medical device Ponzi scheme.
Between June 2018 and June 2022, Scott, through his company Trusted Medical Partnership, told investors he was on the brink of fulfillment for orders from Northern California health care providers. He claimed a capital shortage stood in the way, but offered substantial returns in short time with zero risk. To back up his claims, Scott dished out falsified purchase orders to some of his unsuspecting victims.
These naive souls invested their money based on Scott’s lies, only to find themselves in a financial black hole as they received little to no returns. Meanwhile, the defendant was busy spending the ill-gotten funds on personal vices like gambling and extravagant expenses, while paying off previous investors to keep his scheme chugging along.
This investigation is a testament to the FBI’s relentless pursuit of justice, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Dhruv M. Sharma leading the prosecution. If convicted, Scott could be looking at 20 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine. The court will determine the sentence based on statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines, but let there be no doubt — until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, the defendant is presumed innocent.
