Kickback Scheme Unfolds: Local Ophthalmologist Charged
A shocking case of healthcare corruption has come to light in Louisiana, as U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced the filing of a one-count Bill of Information against Jobie Crear, M.D., a 65-year-old New Orleans ophthalmologist. Crear stands accused of paying a staggering $231,034 in illegal kickbacks.
According to investigators, Crear operated Comprehensive Nursing and Home Health Service, Inc. (Comprehensive) in New Orleans. It is alleged that he paid recruiters to bring Medicare beneficiaries to Comprehensive, in direct contravention of healthcare regulations.
The investigation, led by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has shed light on a complex web of corruption within the healthcare system. If convicted, Crear faces a maximum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Polite emphasized that the Bill of Information is merely a charge, and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The prosecution is being led by U.S. Attorney Patrice Harris Sullivan.
