Buffalo, N.Y. – A gritty federal crime scene plays out as Jose Manuel Salazar Estrada, a 38-year-old Mexican national, faces the brunt of justice for his illegal re-entry into the United States after an aggravated felony conviction.
Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., dropped the hammer on Estrada, sentencing him to one year in prison by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo. The defendant’s transgressions were not merely a boundary crossing but a brazen defiance of the law following his prior deportations and life ban from entering the United States after being convicted of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens for profit in 2015.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Lamarque, who prosecuted the case with tenacity, recounted how on December 7, 2016, Estrada was found at the Peace Bridge Port of Entry, his deception unraveling after a routine interaction with officials. The man from Nogales, Mexico, had presented himself as an American citizen, providing false documentation to support his claim.
Lamarque’s team swiftly exposed Estrada’s true identity and immigration status, revealing that he had been deported five times before. His latest expulsion followed a life sentence ban imposed after the 2015 conviction for his role in illegal alien transport schemes.
The story doesn’t end there; Estrada was also handed an additional six months in prison for violating the conditions of his supervised release by returning to the United States. This sentence is a testament to the determination of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, led by Director of Field Operations Rose Brophy, who spearheaded the investigation that brought Estrada to justice.
