Shawna Marie Chapman, Attempted Murder, Utah 2016

SALT LAKE CITY — Shawna Marie Chapman, 30, is staring down a life sentence after being indicted for attempting to murder an 11-month-old child at Hill Air Force Base. The federal grand jury’s two-count indictment against Chapman includes charges of attempt to commit murder and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Chapman, who was living with her husband, a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, allegedly stabbed the infant in the abdomen and arm on February 10, 2016. The child suffered serious injuries from the attack. Chapman committed the crime while accompanying a U.S. military service member in Spain, which brought the case under federal jurisdiction.

The indictment was unsealed Friday afternoon following Chapman’s arrest and initial court appearance. At her arraignment, Chapman pleaded not guilty to both counts. Her trial is set for June 26, 2017, before U.S. District Judge David Sam.

Despite the serious charges, Magistrate Judge Paul M. Warner released Chapman from custody under strict conditions. These include reporting to pretrial services, maintaining base housing, complying with travel restrictions, surrendering her passport, and undergoing mental health care. Additionally, any supervised visits with the child must be conducted by a third-party not related to her.

Chapman faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison if convicted. The investigation into the case is being led by the FBI and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, with trial attorneys Christine Duey, Drew Yeates, and Andrea Martinez prosecuting on behalf of the United States.
