Lafayette Man Jailed for Firearm Charge
A Lafayette man has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for possessing a firearm while trafficking marijuana. Anthony Von Fisher Jr., 31, was found guilty of one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The investigation began on March 6, 2016, at the 200 block of West Grant Street in Lafayette. Police were called to the scene due to suspicious drug activity around 1 a.m. When questioned by authorities, Fisher admitted to possessing marijuana.
During the search, police found 27 grams of marijuana in nine small clear plastic bags in Fisher’s front right pocket, and 34 grams were found in a bag in his front left pocket. A loaded .25 caliber handgun was also discovered in Fisher’s pant leg.
Fisher admitted that the marijuana was pre-packaged for distribution. The investigation and prosecution are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at promoting firearm safety and reducing firearm crimes.
The ATF and the Lafayette Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Myers P. Namie prosecuted the case. U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell sentenced Fisher to 60 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative focuses on preventing the possession and use of firearms by individuals who are not authorized to possess them, such as those with a history of violent or firearm-related crimes. This case highlights the importance of this initiative in reducing firearm crimes and promoting public safety.
Anthony Von Fisher Jr. will serve his 5-year sentence for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. His supervised release will follow his prison term. The community can expect to see continued efforts from law enforcement to combat firearm-related crimes.
