PHILADELPHIA, PA – A former Philadelphia Sheriff’s Deputy is facing serious federal charges after allegedly peddling semi-automatic pistols on the street, even admitting to selling one to a man who explicitly stated he was in the country illegally and risked deportation if caught with a firearm. Samir Ahmad, 29, of Philadelphia, was arrested and charged with firearms trafficking and selling firearms to a person unlawfully in the United States, according to a Department of Justice announcement.
Court documents detail a brazen disregard for the law. While still employed by the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office, Ahmad allegedly sold two semi-automatic pistols and ammunition to a confidential informant in October 2022. The informant, acutely aware of his precarious legal status, reportedly informed Ahmad he could “get deported” if discovered with a gun. Ahmad’s response, as outlined in the criminal complaint, was chillingly dismissive: “You don’t got to worry about none of that.” The sale netted Ahmad a quick $3,000.
U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero didn’t mince words, stating, “As alleged, Samir Ahmad abused his authority – to the greatest extent possible – as a sworn law enforcement officer.” Romero emphasized the dangerous implications of Ahmad’s actions, adding, “The defendant was allegedly illegally selling firearms on the street to at least one person who was not permitted to possess them, adding fuel to the already-incendiary fire of deadly gun violence in the City of Philadelphia.”
Federal investigators moved swiftly. Ahmad was terminated from his position with the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office on October 19, 2022, and subsequently taken into federal custody. The investigation, a collaborative effort between the FBI, ATF, the Department of Labor Office of the Inspector General, and the Philadelphia Police Department, remains ongoing, suggesting further revelations may be forthcoming. Jacqueline Maguire, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division, condemned Ahmad’s actions as “reprehensible,” highlighting the city’s ongoing struggle with illegal guns fueling violent crime.
Eric Degree, acting Special Agent in charge of ATF’s Philadelphia Field Division, echoed the sentiment, stressing the need to address the normalization of gun violence. “We cannot let the gun violence we are seeing become the norm,” Degree said. “We will continue to use our expertise to identify, investigate, and incarcerate those who commit and those who facilitate the violent firearm crimes that plague our streets.”
If convicted, Ahmad faces a maximum possible sentence of 15 years in federal prison. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys J. Jeanette Kang and Justin T. Ashenfelter. This case serves as a stark reminder that even those sworn to uphold the law are not above it, and that the trafficking of firearms continues to pose a significant threat to public safety in Philadelphia and beyond.
