Samuel Swift Bird, Meth Trafficking, South Dakota 2021

On April 19, 2021, Samuel Swift Bird, 30, was sentenced to 34 months in federal prison for meth trafficking in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence, which also included three years of supervised release, a $500 fine, a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims fund in the amount of $100, and forfeiture of three firearms and ammunition.

The crime occurred on August 30, 2019, at a motel in Eagle Butte, where Swift Bird knowingly and intentionally possessed five grams of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. He also possessed a handgun and over $6,000 in U.S. currency.

Swift Bird was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 9, 2020, and pled guilty on February 1, 2021.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. It is also part of Project Guardian, a Department of Justice initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.

The investigation was conducted by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook prosecuted the case.

Swift Bird was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
