A San Antonio tax preparer is facing prison time after a federal jury convicted her of filing false tax returns, bilking her clients out of $8 million.
Natasha Sheree Banks-Brown, 45, ran ‘Tasha’s Total Tax Service’ from 2016, but behind the scenes, she was cooking the books, stuffing false deductions and credits into her clients’ returns.
The scheme unraveled in December 2020 when the IRS started sniffing around. Investigators found that Banks-Brown used tax prep software to siphon refunds into her own bank account, then handed out partial payments to her marks.
Multiple clients testified that they never saw their returns or reviewed them with Banks-Brown, who claimed she’d take her fee out of the refund. The feds say she filed 1,200 returns between 2017 and 2021, netting over $8 million in phony refunds.
Banks-Brown was indicted in April 2024 and arrested the same month. She went to trial this April, where a jury delivered a guilty verdict. Sentencing is set for July.
