Mark Jenkins, Methamphetamine Conspiracy, Iowa 2018

Mark Jenkins, 51, of Sanborn, Iowa, pleaded guilty today to conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture containing methamphetamine, capping a three-year federal investigation into a sprawling drug network operating near a public middle school.

Jenkins admitted in court that from 2015 through January 10, 2018, he transported up to five-pound quantities of methamphetamine from a source in Omaha, Nebraska, all while living less than a block from a public middle school in northwest Iowa. The proximity to the school added a chilling dimension to the case, underscoring the brazen nature of his operation.

According to the plea agreement, Jenkins not only dealt in multi-pound shipments of meth but also sold numerous firearms over the years. He admitted to stashing as much as $100,000 in illicit proceeds. On the day of his arrest, Jenkins and a co-conspirator were caught with approximately 177.89 grams of actual (pure) methamphetamine, a lethal cache in any community.

Jenkins now faces the full weight of federal sentencing guidelines. He is subject to a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life behind bars. Additional penalties include a $5,000,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and up to five years of supervised release following any prison term. Sentencing is pending a presentence report and will be delivered by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand.

The probe that brought Jenkins down was a grinding, multi-agency effort led by the Iowa Great Lakes Drug Task Force. Assistance poured in from the O’Brien County, Clay County, Dickinson County, Osceola County, and Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Offices, along with the Sheldon and Sanborn Police Departments. The Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Department of Public Safety, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the DEA Tri-State Drug Task Force all played pivotal roles.

The case, docketed as 18-CR-4004-LTS, was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Ajay Alexander. Jenkins remains in U.S. Marshal custody, awaiting sentencing.
