Antonio Quintana-Pena, Heroin and Methamphetamine Trafficking, NM 2024

ALBUQUERQUE – Antonio Quintana-Pena, 40, of Santa Fe, is headed to federal prison for a decade after pleading guilty to a litany of drug and weapons charges. Quintana-Pena received a 120-month sentence, with no chance of parole, for possessing and distributing heroin and methamphetamine while illegally carrying firearms. The case highlights the persistent flow of narcotics and illegal guns through New Mexico, and the federal government’s commitment to taking these criminals off the streets.

The unraveling of Quintana-Pena’s operation began in the early hours of July 8, 2020, when Española Police Department officers responded to a 911 call about a suspicious vehicle. They found Quintana-Pena unconscious behind the wheel of a gray Nissan. The scene quickly turned incriminating: a silver and black box in his lap held a baseball-sized bundle of heroin. A search revealed a loaded, stolen pistol stashed under the driver’s seat, alongside methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and over $2,000 in cash. It wasn’t just possession; Quintana-Pena was actively moving product.

But the Nissan was just the tip of the iceberg. Later that year, on November 19, 2020, FBI agents raided Quintana-Pena’s Santa Fe residence. The search of his bedroom uncovered a significant cache of narcotics – over 190 grams of methamphetamine and nearly 100 grams of heroin – hidden within safes. Multiple loaded firearms were also seized, along with ammunition and additional cash. This wasn’t a small-time operation; Quintana-Pena was clearly a serious player in the local drug trade.

Crucially, Quintana-Pena is a previously convicted felon. He admitted to knowingly possessing the drugs with intent to distribute and to using the firearms to further his criminal activities. He also acknowledged that his prior convictions barred him from legally owning or possessing any firearms. This wasn’t a lapse in judgment; it was a calculated risk taken by a repeat offender who clearly disregarded the law. The feds weren’t buying it.

U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Philip Russell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the sentencing today. “This sentence sends a clear message,” Ellison stated. “Those who traffic drugs and illegally possess firearms will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.” The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Santa Fe Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office and the Española Police Department, demonstrating the power of interagency cooperation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David B. Hirsch successfully prosecuted the case. Upon his release from prison, Quintana-Pena will face five years of supervised release, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored. While 10 years is a substantial sentence, it remains to be seen if it will be enough to deter Quintana-Pena – and others like him – from returning to a life of crime. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on future developments.
