Armed Bank Robbery Rocks Santa Fe
A 25-year-old Santa Fe man is facing up to 25 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to an armed bank robbery charge.
Jacob P. Wheeler, a Santa Fe native, robbed the Century Bank located at 498 N. Guadalupe St. in Santa Fe on May 15, 2015. The brazen heist caught the attention of authorities who received a tip later that same day identifying Wheeler as the suspect.
According to court documents, Wheeler entered the bank, pointed a gun at a teller, and demanded money. He then climbed onto the counter to grab cash from a drawer.
Wheeler was arrested on May 26, 2015, and subsequently indicted on June 24, 2015. The indictment charged him with armed bank robbery of the Century Bank.
During his plea hearing, Wheeler admitted to robbing the bank through force, violence, and intimidation. He remains in custody pending a sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
The case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of the FBI and the Santa Fe Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Norman Cairns.
At sentencing, Wheeler faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison, followed by up to five years of supervised release.
