The gruesome case of a Santee woman who subjected a minor child to unsanitary living conditions has come to an end. Santeena McBride, age 35, of Santee, Nebraska, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for felony child abuse and neglect.

According to the United States Attorney Susan Lehr, McBride’s actions resulted in serious bodily injury to the minor child, who was hospitalized for both anemia and malnutrition. The Santee Sioux Nation Police Department received an intake from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services on May 23, 2022, related to the minor child in need of a welfare check at a home on the Santee Sioux Nation Indian Reservation.

Tribal police responded to the home and found the minor child living in deplorable conditions. Investigation revealed that McBride had placed the minor in a situation that endangered her life or physical health. McBride was responsible for the minor’s care, and her actions were deemed a serious breach of trust.

The case was charged in United States District Court because McBride and the minor child are both Native American and the offense occurred on an Indian Reservation, giving rise to federal jurisdiction. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
