Riek Kuany, Bank Robbery, Nebraska 2023

A brazen bank robber with a penchant for ski masks and guns has finally seen justice. Riek Kuany, 25, of Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced to 140 months in prison for his role in two separate bank robberies.

On April 26, 2024, United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Kuany would spend the next 11 years and four months behind bars. But make no mistake, this isn’t just a slap on the wrist – it’s a hard-hitting sentence that reflects the severity of Kuany’s crimes.

The investigation into Kuany’s bank heists began on April 6, 2023, when he and an accomplice stormed the First Interstate Bank at 47th and L Streets in Omaha. Both men were armed with handguns and wore ski masks, gloves, and reflective work vests. Kuany made off with $6,584 in cash from the bank’s cash drawers.

Just five days later, Kuany struck again – this time at the Bank of the West on 87th and West Center Road in Omaha. Wearing a hair net and medical face mask, Kuany pointed a handgun at bank employees and demanded money. He made off with a whopping $10,963 in cash.

First Interstate Bank and Bank of the West are both insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, but that didn’t stop Kuany from brazenly carrying out his crimes. The investigation into Kuany’s accomplices is still ongoing, but one thing is clear: this young man has a serious problem with bank robbery.

Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. handed down the sentence, which includes a 5-year term of supervised release after Kuany’s prison stint. In addition to his sentence, Kuany was ordered to pay $17,547 in restitution to the banks. That’s a small price to pay for the freedom and security of innocent bank employees, but it’s a start.

Kuany’s crimes have sent shockwaves through the Omaha community, and his sentencing serves as a stark reminder that bank robbery will not be tolerated. The Omaha Police Department led the investigation into Kuany’s crimes, and their hard work has brought a measure of justice to the victims.
