Riek Kuany, Bank Robbery, Nebraska 2023

Bank Robber Sentenced to 11.7 Years

In a brazen display of thievery, Riek Kuany, a 25-year-old man from Omaha, Nebraska, robbed two banks in the city, making off with a total of $17,547. The heists took place on April 6 and April 11, 2023, at the First Interstate Bank and the Bank of the West, respectively.

On April 6, 2023, Kuany and an accomplice entered the First Interstate Bank at 47th and L Streets in Omaha, wearing ski masks and gloves. Kuany donned a reflective work vest, while his partner held a handgun. The duo pointed their guns at bank employees, who handed over approximately $6,584 in U.S. currency. The pair escaped in a stolen SUV driven by another individual.

Just five days later, Kuany struck again at the Bank of the West on 87th and West Center Road in Omaha. This time, he wore a hair net and a medical face mask, along with a handgun. He pointed the firearm at bank employees, demanded money, and made off with approximately $10,963 in cash. Kuany fled the scene in a gold Jeep.

The investigation into the bank robberies was led by the Omaha Police Department. While Kuany has been sentenced, the investigation into others involved in the crimes is ongoing.

On April 26, 2024, U.S. District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. sentenced Kuany to a total of 140 months in prison, with no parole available in the federal system. After his release, Kuany will serve a 5-year term of supervised release. Additionally, he was ordered to pay restitution of $17,547 to the banks for the amounts taken during the robberies.

The two banks affected by the robberies, First Interstate Bank and Bank of the West, are both insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
