WASHINGTON – In a brazen mid-day heist, Elliot Jacobs, 32, of Washington, D.C., was found guilty of armed robbery and burglary after a jury trial, announced U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
The Superior Court jury delivered the verdict on May 22, 2024, finding Jacobs guilty of two counts of armed robbery, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, second-degree burglary while armed, and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. The Honorable Heidi Pasichow scheduled sentencing for August 16, 2024.
“This case is a stark reminder that justice will be served for those who commit violent crimes in our city,” said U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves. “We are committed to holding accountable those who terrorize innocent DC residents with guns.”
According to the government’s evidence, Jacobs went to the Benning Road Barbershop on August 8, 2020, at approximately 12:45 p.m. He asked for a trim but was told the shop didn’t take walk-in customers due to the pandemic. Jacobs then called the barber using a three-way call to disguise his number, and the barber told him to call back in about fifteen minutes.
Jacobs returned to the shop, sat in the barber chair, and spoke with the barber for several minutes. During their conversation, a second man appeared at the shop, and both Jacobs and that accomplice pulled handguns and pointed them at the two barbers. Jacobs then robbed both barbers before fleeing with his accomplice.
MPD detectives subsequently used Jacobs’ cellphone number to develop him as a suspect. Jacobs was arrested on August 26, 2020, and he has been held in custody since.
This case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sabena Auyeung and William Lawrence.
The prosecution’s evidence included testimony from the barbers who were robbed, as well as physical evidence collected from the scene of the crime. The jury’s verdict brings closure to the victims of this senseless crime.
Jacobs’ sentencing is scheduled for August 16, 2024. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the second-degree burglary charge and up to 10 years for each of the armed robbery charges.
