BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Esteban Santiago Ruiz faces a potential death sentence after being indicted on federal charges for the chilling mass-shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in January 2017.
The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury in Broward County, includes eleven counts of violence against persons at an airport, six counts of using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and five counts of causing death with a firearm. Santiago’s arraignment is set for January 30th before Judge Barry L. Seltzer.
The complaint alleges that on January 6, 2017, Santiago opened fire on unsuspecting passengers at the airport’s Terminal 2 baggage claim area, taking lives and leaving six injured. He was apprehended by a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy after he ran out of ammunition.
Assistant United States Attorneys Ricardo A. Del Toro and Lawrence LaVecchio will lead the prosecution with support from Department of Justice Trial Attorney Larry Schneider.
