Pittsburgh Man Charged with Filing False Tax Returns
The FBI has announced that James H. Grant, a 31-year-old Pittsburgh resident, has been indicted on five counts of aiding or assisting in the preparation or filing of false federal income tax returns.
According to the indictment, Grant filed false tax returns for other individuals, including false Schedule C information, and requested refunds that were not owed to the filers. This is a serious crime with serious consequences.
Grant faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.00 for each of the five counts. The actual sentence will depend on the seriousness of the offense and Grant’s prior criminal history.
The investigation leading to the indictment was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci will be prosecuting the case.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is simply an accusation and not a conviction. Grant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case is a reminder that tax crimes can have serious consequences, and those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
