Las Vegas, NV – Santos Esparza-Torres, a Mexican national with a history of five deportations to the United States, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan to 24 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his illegal reentry into the country. The sentence came after Esparza-Torres was caught by immigration officials, this time while serving a state sentence on a conviction for conspiracy to violate the uniform controlled substances act.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Esparza-Torres was deported on five separate occasions prior to his latest illegal entry. His previous deportations occurred on October 29, 2005, September 18, 2008, September 24, 2019, January 17, 2020, and April 16, 2020. Esparza-Torres was taken into ICE custody in 2024.
This is not the first time Esparza-Torres has been convicted for reentering the United States. In 2020, he was convicted in the Southern District of California for the same offense. His latest conviction marks his second such offense.
United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada and Salt Lake City Field Office Director Jason Knight announced the sentencing. The ICE Salt Lake City, Las Vegas Sub-Office investigated the case, while the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada prosecuted it.
Esparza-Torres will be eligible for parole on his state drug conviction in March 2026, at which point he will begin serving his federal sentence. The public is reminded to report crimes and suspicious activity by calling 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or completing the online tip form.
