Santos Esparza-Torres, Re-Entry After Deportation, California 2023

LAS VEGAS — In a stark reminder of the consequences for illegal reentry into the United States, Santos Esparza-Torres, a Mexican national with five prior deportations, has been sentenced to two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down today by United States District Judge James C. Mahan.

Esparza-Torres, whose immigration violations stretch back over a decade, was caught after he entered the country for the fifth time. He was initially deported on October 29, 2005, followed by removals on September 18, 2008, September 24, 2019, January 17, 2020, and April 16, 2020. The latest apprehension came in 2024 when he was found by immigration officials while serving a state sentence for conspiracy to violate the uniform controlled substances act.

His parole eligibility on his state drug conviction is set for March of 2026, at which point he will begin serving his 24-month federal sentence. Esparza-Torres pleaded guilty to one count of Deported Alien Found in the United States, marking his second conviction for this offense after being convicted in 2020 in the Southern District of California.

The case was announced by United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada and Salt Lake City Field Office Director Jason Knight. The investigation was conducted by the ICE Salt Lake City, Las Vegas Sub-Office, with prosecution handled by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada.

Members of the public are encouraged to report crimes and suspicious activity by calling 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or completing the online tip form. This sentencing serves as a chilling example of the penalties faced by those who defy U.S. immigration laws.
