Julio Zarate-Ocegueda, a 51-year-old Mexican national living in Chicago, Illinois, has been handed a six-month prison sentence for illegal reentry into the United States. Judge Gretchen S. Lund of the United States District Court imposed the punishment after Zarate-Ocegueda pleaded guilty to the felony charge.
Following his arrest, Zarate-Ocegueda, who was detained until his sentencing, was also sentenced to one year of supervised release. The court records indicate that he had been previously removed from the United States in 2004 and again in 2005.
The defendant’s criminal history is marked by convictions for threatening a crime with intent to terrorize, battery, criminal threats (death), and numerous driving-related offenses.
United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the sentence, emphasizing the severity of Zarate-Ocegueda’s actions. ‘This sentence serves as a stark reminder that illegal reentry is a serious offense and will not be tolerated,’ said Proctor.
The investigation into Zarate-Ocegueda was led by Homeland Security Investigations, with valuable support from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney Emily Morgan handled the prosecution of the case.
With this conviction, Zarate-Ocegueda has been dealt a significant blow in his attempts to evade the law and has been placed on notice regarding future violations.
