Julio Zarate-Ocegueda, a 51-year-old Mexican national living in Chicago, Illinois, has been handed a six-month prison sentence followed by one year of supervised release after pleading guilty to felony reentry of a removed alien. The sentence was announced by Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor following the sentencing hearing before United States District Court Judge Gretchen S. Lund.
Zarate-Ocegueda, currently detained since his arrest, has been flagged for previous removals from the United States in 2004 and 2005. His criminal history is a litany of offenses including threatening crimes with intent to terrorize, battery, criminal threats (death), and multiple driving-related infractions.
This sentence comes as a result of an investigation carried out by Homeland Security Investigations, bolstered by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney Emily Morgan was the lead prosecutor on the case.
Despite his long list of convictions, Zarate-Ocegueda faces yet another term in prison, a stark reminder of the serious nature of illegal reentry into the United States after removal.
The grim tally of offenses and sentences underscores the federal government’s zero-tolerance stance on immigration violations, emphasizing that the rule of law remains unwavering even for those who have been previously deported.
As Zarate-Ocegueda begins his prison term, law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on similar cases, aiming to send a message that the United States is a nation that enforces its immigration laws without exception.
