Oxford, MS – Jamaal Ellison, a 40-year-old from Sardis, was today sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Ellison was stopped for speeding by an Oxford Police Department officer in January 2022. The officer chased him after he fled the scene in his car and crashed into a pole. Ellison attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended. Officers discovered a Glock.40 caliber pistol, ammunition, and illegal narcotics in Ellison’s vehicle.
Ellison, who has a prior record of multiple felony convictions for selling narcotics, was sentenced under the Armed Career Criminal Act, which mandates a minimum sentence of 15 years up to life imprisonment. U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock handed down an 188-month sentence and five years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner emphasized that consequences for repeat felons are a priority in the Northern District of Mississippi, stating, “Our communities should be able to expect real consequences when they face repeat felony offenders.” ATF New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the commitment to community safety.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated the case along with the Oxford Police Department and Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Hampton prosecuted the case. This sentence is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence.
