SAVANNAH, GA — A relentless firebug has been locked up for nearly a decade and a half for his fiery campaign in Savannah. Marvin Antwon Williams, 44, was sentenced to 151 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of arson.
In a gritty turn of events that had the city on edge, Williams, a resident of Chatham County, was found guilty of setting fires at various locations across the city. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, Jill E. Steinberg, called the fires “highly dangerous and potentially devastating,” praising the swift response of the Savannah Fire Department that prevented greater harm.
Williams, who had been staying in a vacant home under renovation without authorization, was nabbed by investigators after a series of blazes. The federal judge, R. Stan Baker, sentenced Williams to three years of supervised release following his prison term, ensuring he would not be able to repeat his dangerous acts upon release.
“Arson is an extremely violent crime that puts everyone at risk,” said Beau Kolodka, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Atlanta Field Office. “The ATF and our partners are committed to keeping communities safe from such threats.”
The Savannah Fire Arson Unit expressed gratitude for the ATF’s and U.S. Attorney’s office’s assistance in the investigation. Fred Anderson, Chief Investigator, noted the importance of removing arsonists from the community for everyone’s safety.
This case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Savannah Fire Department Arson Unit, with prosecution handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Z. Spitulnik on behalf of the United States.
