Tax Preparer Charged with Filing False Returns
A 10-count indictment has been handed down against Jessica D. Washington, a 34-year-old tax preparer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on charges of Aiding or Assisting in the Preparation or Filing of False Federal Income Tax Returns.
According to the indictment, Washington, who worked at EasyTax Refund, prepared tax returns that falsified Schedules C income and claimed earned income tax credit and an unlawful tax refund in 2018.
Federal authorities announced the indictment, with Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman stating that the law provides for a sentence of not more than 3 years of imprisonment for each count, totaling 30 years, and a fine of $2,500,000.00.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is responsible for prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
The Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the indictment.
