Scott Clark, 40, of Salisbury, Vermont, was arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle today in connection with allegations of possession of a stolen firearm. Clark was ordered detained pending trial. The indictment, handed down on unnamed charges, alleges that Clark possessed a stolen Glock .40 semi-automatic handgun. According to court records, on September 23, 2022, a concerned citizen contacted Vermont State Police, reporting suspicious activity indicative of ongoing burglaries at the Waterhouses Campground in Salisbury. Responding troopers encountered Clark and his female companion at the campground and in the vicinity of a white Jeep Liberty. Clark gave the trooper a false name, ‘Nathan Clark,’ and a false date of birth. During the encounter, Clark was observed putting something in his female companion’s purse and then dropping a black holster to the ground. The companion’s purse was inspected by the trooper and found to contain a black Glock .40 semi-automatic handgun. Records showed the firearm was originally purchased by an individual who owns a residence at the Waterhouses Campground. The investigation revealed that Clark had been burglarizing residences at the campground and had stolen the handgun during one of these burglaries. Additional stolen property, including a spare .40 caliber magazine and box of .40 caliber ammunition, was found in the Jeep Liberty. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The United States Attorney’s Office emphasizes that an indictment contains allegations only and that Scott Clark remains presumed innocent until and unless he is convicted of a crime. Clark’s defense is represented by Mark Oettinger, Esq.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan Ophardt. United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest commended the investigatory efforts of the Vermont State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. This case highlights the importance of community-based initiatives in preventing violence and reducing crime.
