Burlington, VT – In a grim turn of events, Michael Wilson, 24, from Kingston, Jamaica, has been charged with possession of a firearm by an alien unlawfully in the country. The charges stem from an incident where Wilson shot an individual during a dispute.
On June 28, 2025, near Dorset Street in South Burlington, Wilson allegedly shot his victim in the shoulder. Following the shooting, he fled to Connecticut, where he was eventually apprehended. Wilson has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and reckless endangerment by the State of Vermont.
However, on August 25, 2025, the state withdrew its request for bail, releasing Wilson from state custody. It was later discovered that Wilson overstayed his visa when he arrived in the United States in June 2023, making him an alien unlawfully present in the country.
This revelation led to federal charges against Wilson, including illegal firearm possession. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the United States Border Patrol played a pivotal role in the investigation, ensuring public safety by enforcing federal firearms laws.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher emphasized that the case underscores the commitment to protect communities from violent crime. Wilson faces up to 15 years’ imprisonment if convicted.
In addition to ATF and Border Patrol, the South Burlington Police Department, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, Winooski Police Department, and Windsor Connecticut Police Department were commended for their efforts in apprehending Wilson. Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Gilman is prosecuting the case, with Wilson represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Charles N. Curlett, Jr.
This incident is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
