Dennis Martin, Illegal Firearm Possession, Vermont 2019

Crime Beat: A jury in Burlington, Vermont, has convicted Dennis Martin, 42, of Colchester, for unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The conviction follows a four-day trial before United States District Judge Christina Reiss.

Martin’s troubles began on February 17, 2019, when his wife reported domestic abuse by him. Just one day later, Martin’s mother-in-law received a Snapchat video where he brandished a firearm and made threats. Colchester Police arrested Martin for felony domestic assault and disorderly conduct with an electronic device, seizing a Ruger model LCP .380 caliber pistol from the scene.

In June 2021, Martin was alleged to have again brandished a firearm in Burlington’s Franklin Square. He turned himself into police a few days later. ATF charged him with being a felon in possession of a firearm for the February 2019 incident, leading to his detention pending trial.

On February 9, 2023, the jury found Martin guilty of knowingly possessing the Ruger LCP .380 caliber pistol while knowing he had a prior conviction. He remains detained pending sentencing.

United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest praised the ATF and local law enforcement for their work on the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office vowed to continue prioritizing prosecution of felons who possess firearms and commit domestic abuse. Martin faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and up to three years’ supervised release.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence. For more information on PSN, visit https://www.justice.gov/psn.
