Christopher R. Jansen, Child Sex Exploitation, South Dakota 2014

A 34-year-old Selby, South Dakota man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for sexual exploitation of a child and distribution of material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, authorities said.

Christopher R. Jansen, 34, was indicted on August 13, 2014, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on August 19, 2014, where he pled not guilty to the indictment.

According to court documents, Jansen used a minor to produce visual depictions of sexually explicit conduct between June 2011 and December 2013, and knowingly distributed visual depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct between December 2013 and July 2014.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in custody for sexual exploitation of a child, and a mandatory minimum of 15 years. The distribution of material involving the sexual exploitation of minors charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in custody, with a mandatory minimum of 5 years.

Jansen is being held in custody pending further hearings. A trial date has been set for October 21, 2014. The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, with assistance from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and the Mobridge Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher and Keith Becker, a trial attorney with the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, are prosecuting the case.

The charges against Jansen are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. If convicted, Jansen could face additional penalties, including restitution and fines of up to $250,000.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child sex exploitation and online child predators.
