SPARTA, Ill. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office is hitting the streets of Sparta to combat a rising tide of fraud targeting our most vulnerable citizens. In a bid to educate seniors about the ever-evolving tactics scammers use, they’re teaming up with the Sparta Senior Center to host an essential fraud prevention seminar.
“Fraudsters are relentless, bombarding us with calls, texts, and emails under false pretenses,” warns U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft. “It’s disheartening that we’ve seen cases where seniors have been defrauded of their life savings. This seminar is a crucial step in arming our community with the knowledge to avoid becoming victims.”
The event, set for 12 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20th, will provide attendees with real-world information about online scams and fraud schemes specifically designed to target seniors. It will also detail federal cases prosecuted in the Southern District of Illinois.
Attendees can expect an interactive presentation that includes tips on detecting scams and guidance on how to report suspicious activities to law enforcement if they believe they’ve been targeted.
The seminar is a public service, free of charge, and open to all. The Sparta Senior Center, located at 500 W. 2nd St., will be the venue for this vital community event.
Don’t let your loved ones fall prey to these cunning scammers. Join us in Sparta for an informative afternoon focused on safeguarding our seniors against financial fraud.”
