Serial child abusers in the Eastern District of Virginia have been caught in a crackdown led by US Attorney’s Office. Between March 3 and March 12, at least 7 new cases were brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The cases involved production, receipt, and possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) by individuals including David Brent Timberlake, 65, of Henrico, and Nicolas Antonio Lainez, 19, who allegedly recorded himself sexually exploiting a six-year-old victim. Rian Wayne Johnson, 38, a Bahamian national, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a child and faces 15 to 30 years in prison.
Repeat offender Joseph Downing Barnes Jr., 35, of Virginia Beach, was indicted for producing, transporting, and receiving CSAM. He was previously convicted of receiving CSAM in 2016. Tucker Lee Martin, 31, of Norfolk, was indicted for producing, attempting to produce, and attempting to coerce a minor.
The cases were brought by the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia in collaboration with the FBI, DEA, ATF, and other agencies. The efforts have secured 7 convictions and 8 guilty pleas, including a life sentence for a repeat offender.
