A former Army soldier’s dark secret has been exposed, and the consequences are severe. Seth Herrera, 36, of El Paso, Texas, pleaded guilty to child exploitation crimes committed in Alaska and Texas. The disturbing charges include attempted production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) depicting minors known to him and trafficking of CSAM.
According to court documents, Herrera’s descent into the dark web began in March 2021. He started using The Onion Router (TOR) and multiple encrypted and/or privacy-enhancing applications to access, possess, receive, and transport CSAM on his cell phones. Over six weeks, he uploaded over 100 files to a publicly accessible group on one of the platforms. The sheer scope of his crimes is staggering, with Herrera participating in hundreds of groups and channels dedicated to CSAM.
Law enforcement seized Herrera’s devices in May 2024 and discovered tens of thousands of CSAM videos and images, depicting sadistic and masochistic content involving minors. Some of the groups he belonged to focused on CSAM involving bestiality, incest, and infants/toddlers. The investigation into Herrera’s crimes is a grim reminder of the horrors that lurk in the darkest corners of the internet.
Herrera’s guilty plea comes with a hefty price. While the exact sentence has not been announced, the severity of the charges suggests a lengthy prison term.
