A prior convicted sex offender from New Orleans, David Morel, 42, has plead guilty to possession of child sex abuse materials. The guilty plea came on May 19, 2026, after a search of his home on October 20, 2025, uncovered images of pre-pubescent child pornography on his electronic devices. Morel, who was previously convicted in federal court in 2016 for possessing similar materials, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The case was investigated by state law enforcement officials and federal agents, and is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
According to the bill of information, Morel was found in possession of media depicting the sexual abuse of prepubescent children during the execution of a search warrant at his home. He was arrested on the spot by Louisiana Bureau of Investigation agents and has been held without bail in federal custody ever since.
Morel’s sentencing is scheduled for August 25, 2026, before United States District Judge Jay C. Zainey. He faces a term of supervised release of no less than five years and up to life, in addition to the prison sentence, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
