Sex Trafficker Convicted in Charlotte
A federal jury has convicted Shahid Hassan Muslim, aka ‘Sharp,’ of multiple counts related to a sex trafficking enterprise in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Muslim was convicted of two counts of sex trafficking, one count of kidnapping, one count of production of child pornography, one count of witness tampering, and five counts of promoting a prostitution business enterprise.
The evidence presented during the four-day trial revealed that Muslim operated an extensive sex trafficking enterprise in Charlotte and other cities between 2010 and his arrest in November 2013.
Muslim recruited young women and girls, some as young as 16 years old, from the Charlotte area and advertised them for prostitution on the internet. He promised them a sense of family and belonging, but instead used extreme violence and intimidation to control them.
One witness testified that Muslim never hit the victims in the face because it would damage his ‘merchandise.’ He also kidnapped one of the victims, brutally beating her after she left and reported him to the police.
‘This defendant targeted vulnerable young women and girls and exploited them for his own profit, using a brutal scheme of power and control,’ said Acting Assistant Attorney General Molly Moran.
The conviction is the result of a collaborative effort between the Civil Rights Division, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina, the FBI, and ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations.
Muslim’s sentencing is scheduled for a later date. He faces significant time in prison for his crimes.
