Sex Traffickers Charged in Rochester Case

A federal grand jury in Rochester, N.Y. has returned a six-count superseding indictment charging Jodia Campbell, 32, Laree Greggs, 37, and Jennifer Miller, 26, all of Rochester, N.Y., with various felonies including conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor, sex trafficking of a minor, transportation of a minor across state lines with intent that the minor engage in prostitution, and transportation of an individual across state lines with intent that the individual engage in prostitution.

The indictment, which is the culmination of an investigation on the part of the FBI’s Cyber Task Force, alleges that the defendants recruited and transported minors to engage in prostitution in several states, including New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The 16-year-old victim, who used the online alias “Cherry Red” on Backpage.com, alleged that she was taken to New Jersey and Pennsylvania by the defendants to engage in prostitution.

According to the complaint, investigators reviewed backpage.com ads and found contact information associated with Miller, Campbell, and Greggs. The investigation was led by the Rochester Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael Ciminelli, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Chief Patrick O’Flynn, and Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany H. Lee is handling the case. Lee stated that the charges carry significant penalties, including a maximum penalty of life in prison and a fine of $250,000 for conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor, and a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life and a fine of $250,000 for sex trafficking of a minor and transportation of a minor across state lines.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the federal government. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The indictment is a significant step in the fight against human trafficking and child exploitation in Rochester and across the country. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
