Shaeem Grady Sentenced to 75 Months for Crack Cocaine Distribution and Gun Offenses
Syracuse, NY – A jury found Shaeem Grady, 29, guilty of possessing with the intent to distribute crack cocaine, possessing a gun in furtherance of his drug dealing, and being a felon in possession of a gun.
On March 22, 2013, police observed a baggie of crack cocaine in Grady’s lap as he sat in the passenger seat of a car illegally parked on Catawba Street. When police attempted to arrest Grady, he violently resisted them while trying to access the center console of the vehicle where a loaded handgun was later recovered.
During the struggle, Grady told the driver to ‘pull off, drive away’ while the officers were trying to remove him from the car. Officers were eventually able to take Grady into custody.
Later, as Grady was being walked to the Public Safety Building, he stated to one of the officers, ‘I wasn’t going to kill you.’ Grady was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 2002 conviction for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
Senior U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Scullin, Jr. sentenced Grady to 75 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay a special assessment of $300.
The prosecution resulted from an investigation conducted by the Syracuse Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Brown prosecuted the case.
Grady’s sentence marks a significant blow to the city’s ongoing struggle with drug-related crimes. As communities continue to grapple with the devastating effects of addiction and gun violence, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
