WASHINGTON D.C. – A reckless driver is facing serious time after a D.C. jury convicted Shaquille Taylor, 27, of aggravated assault stemming from a harrowing high-speed chase and near-fatal collision in May 2022. The incident, which unfolded at the intersection of 12th Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW, left another motorist fighting for his life.
According to evidence presented in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, the chaos began around 2:00 AM on May 6th when a U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officer attempted to pull over a black Nissan Altima driven by Taylor near Massachusetts Avenue and 17th Street NW. Taylor briefly complied, partially exiting the vehicle, but then slammed back inside and sped away, blowing through a red light at 12th and Massachusetts.
The Altima violently collided with a green Jaguar, sending the other driver to the hospital with critical injuries. Investigators determined the vehicle was traveling at a terrifying speed – just under 100 MPH – in the seconds leading up to the crash. A firearm was recovered from the passenger-side floorboard of Taylor’s vehicle, though he was ultimately acquitted of several firearms-related charges.
The jury found Taylor guilty of aggravated assault while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, fleeing a law enforcement officer, and malicious destruction of property. While acquitted of some firearm offenses, the evidence clearly demonstrated a pattern of dangerous and reckless behavior. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Michael Buck jointly announced the verdict late today.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division and the Metropolitan Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathryn Bartz and Benjamin Helfand of the USAO’s Major Crimes Unit spearheaded the prosecution, presenting a case that convinced the jury of Taylor’s guilt.
The Honorable Jason Park has scheduled Taylor’s sentencing for January 16, 2024. He now faces a significant prison term for his actions, and the victim continues to recover from the devastating injuries sustained in the crash. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless drivers and the dedication of law enforcement to bringing them to justice.
