Fentanyl Trafficking in Vermont: Shawn Snead Sentenced to 36 Months

A 33-year-old man from St. Johnsbury, Vermont was sentenced to 36 months in prison for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, despite being on federal supervised release.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, Shawn Snead was sentenced on July 7, 2025, to 24 months’ imprisonment, followed by 12 months’ incarceration for violating his supervised release. Following his incarceration, Snead will be subject to a 3-year term of supervised release.

The offense involved multiple controlled purchases of fentanyl in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, with Snead working with a co-conspirator to distribute the illicit substance in February and March 2024.

Critically, Snead committed this offense while on federal supervised release following his 2020 conviction in U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont for conspiracy to distribute heroin and cocaine base. Snead began his supervised release in July 2022, and not even two years later, he was selling drugs again.

The collaborative investigatory efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and the Vermont State Police were commended by Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicole Cate and Michelle Arra, with Snead represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont stated that Snead pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, and his sentence reflects the severity of his crime and the need to hold him accountable for violating his supervised release.
