Shawntanna Lemarus Thompson, Marijuana Distribution and Firearm Charges, North Carolina 2015

Grimy Times Investigates: Shawntanna Lemarus Thompson, 27, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, was sentenced to 120 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, for charges related to marijuana distribution and firearm possession.

The charges stem from two separate incidents in 2014 and 2015. On August 8, 2014, Goldsboro Police Officer responded to a call about a subject waving a gun in the air. Upon arrival, the officer observed Thompson, who matched the subject’s description. Thompson quickly stood up and walked away, reaching into his waistband and retrieving a revolver, which he threw into nearby bushes. The officer located the revolver, a loaded Smith & Wesson, .38 special revolver, as well as 11 grams of marijuana and 98 small baggies from Thompson’s person.

Thompson was also found with additional marijuana at the jail facility. On October 17, 2014, a Goldsboro Police Officer responded to a disturbance call in Goldsboro, where he heard multiple gunshots and observed Thompson standing with his hand behind his back. As the officer passed, Thompson moved his hands to the front of his body, and the officer noticed the butt of a handgun in Thompson’s hand. The officer exited his vehicle and ordered Thompson to stop and show his hands, but Thompson fled from the officer. The officer searched the path where Thompson was running and found a loaded Radom P35 9mm handgun with the serial number scratched off.

The investigation was conducted by the Goldsboro Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney S. Katherine Burnette prosecuted the case for the government.

The sentencing occurred on August 3, 2015, in federal court in Raleigh, North Carolina. The charges stem from two separate incidents in 2014 and 2015.

Thompson’s prison time will be followed by 3 years of supervised release. The investigation and prosecution of this case were conducted by the Goldsboro Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Assistant United States Attorney S. Katherine Burnette prosecuting the case for the government.
