Shiprock Predator, Child Abuse, New Mexico 2023

⏱ 2 min read

A 30-year-old Shiprock man is facing life in prison after pleading guilty to a four-year pattern of sexual abuse against a minor. Brian Begay, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, preyed on the girl between 2015 and 2019, starting when she was just 12 and ending when she turned 16.

The abuse was uncovered by the FBI’s Farmington Resident Agency, who worked with the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Begay pleaded guilty to both sexual abuse of a minor and abusive sexual contact.

As part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jesse Pecoraro will now determine Begay’s sentence. The maximum punishment he faces is life behind bars.

Project Safe Childhood has been fighting the epidemic of child sexual exploitation since its launch in May 2006. The initiative brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute predators like Begay.
