Seventy individuals were charged with re-entering the US after deportation in New Mexico, according to a recent report from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The charges were brought in partnership with the El Paso Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations El Paso.
Of those charged, 70 were accused of re-entering the country after being deported, three were charged with alien smuggling, and 18 were charged with illegal entry. An additional 82 were charged with violating military security regulations and entering restricted areas.
Many of the defendants had prior convictions for serious crimes, including narcotics trafficking, domestic violence, and alien smuggling. The cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating human trafficking and cartels.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico emphasized that public safety and a secure border are its top priorities. The office has been working to enhance enforcement efforts at the border.
