Smugglers were caught red-handed in Western Texas, where federal prosecutors filed 231 new immigration cases in just a week. From March 27 to April 2, human smugglers and repeat offenders with violent crimes, DWIs, and prior removals were targeted.
US citizen Devin Michael Brady was busted on March 27 for allegedly smuggling five illegal aliens for a $3,750 payday. Border Patrol agents discovered a WhatsApp conversation on Brady’s unlocked phone, which showed a proof-of-life video and plans to pick up the aliens.
Brady’s rap sheet dates back to 2003, with convictions for possession of prohibited weapons, evading arrest, and three felonies for failing to register as a sex offender after a juvenile conviction for aggravated sexual assault.
Other defendants included Ervin Lopez-Marroquin, a Guatemalan national with a history of assault, child cruelty, and DUIs, who was charged with illegal re-entry after being found in the US.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons announced the cases, which are part of an ongoing effort to crack down on human smuggling and immigration crimes in Western Texas.
