MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a shocking turn of events, Shylow Shane Young, 37, has pleaded guilty to one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country, a federal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000.00, a term of supervised release of not more than 3 years, and a special assessment in the amount of $100.00.

Young also pleaded guilty to one count of Use, Carry, Brandish, and Discharge of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in addition to the punishment provided for the underlying crime of violence, a fine of $250,000.00, a term of supervised release of not more than 3 years, and a special assessment in the amount of $100.00.

The charges stem from a confrontation on September 5, 2020, at a horse barn in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, where Young refused to leave after being instructed to do so by officers of the Sallisaw Police Department. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Young grabbed one of the officer’s firearms and discharged a round that ricocheted off the ground and caused bodily injury to an assisting officer.

The investigation into the incident was led by the Sallisaw Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Bucca represented the United States in the case.

The Honorable Kimberley West, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, accepted the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report.

The charges against Young are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day. The case serves as a warning to those who would seek to harm others, especially those in positions of authority.

As the case moves forward, the community can expect to see a more detailed account of the events leading up to the confrontation and the aftermath. For now, the focus remains on the sentencing phase, where Young will face the consequences of his actions.
