A 32-year-old man from Franklinton, Louisiana, has been found guilty of illegally possessing a firearm. Sidney Ray Cotton, a resident of Franklinton, pled guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm on a specific date. The incident took place on March 21, 2016, in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
According to court documents, Cotton knowingly possessed a Norinco, Model SKS, serial number H7224, without the permission to do so. This firearm affected interstate commerce, which is a federal offense. The firearm was specifically identified as a Norinco, Model SKS, with the serial number H7224.
Cotton’s previous conviction for simple robbery in the Twenty-Second Judicial Court of Louisiana disqualified him from possessing a firearm. The FBI investigated the matter and uncovered the evidence that led to Cotton’s guilty plea.
Under federal law, Cotton faces a maximum term of ten years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory M. Kennedy.
Acting U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in investigating the case, which led to Cotton’s guilty plea. Evans acknowledged the dedication and expertise of the FBI agents involved in the investigation.
Cotton’s guilty plea marks a significant step in the case, and the court will now determine the appropriate sentence. The outcome of the case will have a significant impact on Cotton’s future and may serve as a deterrent to others who engage in similar activities.
As the investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI are committed to enforcing federal laws and protecting the public from violent crime.
