Asheville, NC – Sigmon Sisters Receive 87 Months in Prison
On Tuesday, September 6, 2016, U.S. District Max O. Cogburn, Jr. handed down a harsh sentence to two sisters, Melissa Sigmon and Shana Sigmon, for their involvement in a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking operation.
The Sigmon sisters, both 29 and 26 years old, respectively, pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of methamphetamine in the Western District of North Carolina. According to court documents, the sisters were part of a network responsible for trafficking multi-pound shipments of methamphetamine in Georgia and Western North Carolina between September 2014 and January 2015.
Shana Sigmon’s fiancé, who was serving time in a Georgia prison for a narcotics trafficking offense, allegedly ran the distribution ring from behind bars. The Sigmon sisters accepted these shipments and then re-distributed the methamphetamine to wholesale customers in the region.
Over the course of the investigation, Shana Sigmon was found to have trafficked over 14.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, while Melissa Sigmon trafficked over 12.5 kilograms of the same substance.
U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose praised the federal, state, and local agencies involved in the investigation, including the DEA, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Swain County Sheriff’s Office, and Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Kent handled the prosecution of the case. The defendants are currently in federal custody and will be transferred to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.
All federal sentences are served without the possibility of parole.
