Sioux City Man Convicted of Mail Fraud
A Sioux City man has been convicted of mail fraud after a lengthy investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Darin Moran, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud in a U.S. District Court in South Dakota on May 21, 2013.
Moran, who was a certified repair technician for Amerikit, an Apple service provider in South Dakota, abused his position to obtain free computers and replacement parts from Apple. He used three separate methods to deceive the company, including making warranty claims on behalf of a personal business and submitting fictitious claims for junk parts.
As part of his scheme, Moran made hundreds of mailings, often via Federal Express, to Apple, attaching false serial numbers to the parts in an effort to deceive the company. The investigation found that Moran had particular knowledge and access to the Apple warranty process, which he exploited for his own gain.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Koliner. A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date has been set for August 12, 2013. Moran was released on bond pending sentencing.
The maximum penalty for mail fraud is 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Moran’s actions not only defrauded Apple but also compromised the trust and integrity of the company’s warranty process.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, and their efforts have brought a guilty verdict in this case. This serves as a reminder that those who abuse their positions of trust will be held accountable for their actions.
As the investigation continues, it is clear that Moran’s actions were a serious breach of trust and a violation of the law. His conviction serves as a warning to others who may consider similar actions.
Amerikit and Apple have taken steps to prevent similar incidents in the future, and the company’s warranty process has been reviewed and updated to minimize the risk of fraud.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance and accountability in preventing and investigating financial crimes. The conviction of Darin Moran sends a clear message that those who engage in mail fraud will be held accountable for their actions.
