Derek Wilkens, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Iowa 2021

A Sioux City man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation.

Derek Wilkens, 35, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on March 4, 2021.

Between May 2019 and August 28, 2019, Wilkens and his co-conspirators distributed at least 3 pounds of methamphetamine, according to court documents.

On August 28, 2019, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Sioux City, where they found Wilkens in possession of approximately 88 grams of methamphetamine.

The evidence against Wilkens was presented at his plea and sentencing hearings, which were held before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand.

Wilkens was sentenced to 72 months’ imprisonment and a term of 3 years of supervised release following his imprisonment. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal and will be transported to a federal prison to serve his sentence.

The case was investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, which includes law enforcement personnel from several agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Sioux City Police Department, and the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood prosecuted the case, bringing Wilkens to justice for his role in the methamphetamine trafficking operation.

The case is a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in our communities, and the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in bringing those responsible to justice.

Wilkens’ sentence serves as a deterrent to others who would engage in similar crimes, and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement to keeping our communities safe.
