Devonta Cobbs, Possession of Firearm by a Drug User, Iowa 2024

A Sioux City man has been sentenced to 34 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm, authorities announced last week.

Devonta Cobbs, a 23-year-old from Sioux City, Iowa, received the prison term after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a drug user on January 19, 2024. This conviction stems from evidence uncovered during an investigation into a shooting incident, where officers found multiple firearms, ammunition, magazines, over $2,000 in cash, and marijuana on Cobbs’ property between May and June 2022.

During that time, Cobbs had admitted to being a marijuana user. In a shocking twist, he was found to be in possession of multiple firearms, which is a serious breach of trust in the community. This case highlights the dangers of firearms in the wrong hands and the devastating consequences of such actions.

Cobbs was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand, who handed down the 34-month prison term with a 2-year term of supervised release to follow. In the federal system, there is no parole, making this sentence all the more severe.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. This program focuses on identifying the most pressing violent crime problems in communities and developing comprehensive solutions to address them. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to develop lasting reductions in crime.

Cobbs is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was investigated by the Sioux City, Iowa Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild.
