Carlos Jose Gomez, Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, Iowa 2020

A Sioux City man is headed to federal prison for more than 15 years after flooding the streets with nearly 4 pounds of high-purity “ice” methamphetamine from his home. Carlos Jose Gomez, 37, admitted to running a steady drug operation from December 2019 until his arrest on March 4, 2020, when law enforcement crashed through his door with a warrant.

Gomez was convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime—charges that carry heavy mandatory minimums under federal law. On August 20, 2020, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence: 123 months for the drug conspiracy and a consecutive 60 months for the gun charge, totaling 15 years and 3 months behind bars.

During the March 4 raid, agents with the Tri-State Drug Task Force seized 5 grams of meth, a loaded handgun, and $1,000 in cash—all tied directly to Gomez. In a signed plea agreement, Gomez admitted not only to selling the drugs but also to keeping the firearm specifically to protect his operation and further his drug trafficking.

The case was built through coordinated surveillance and investigative work by a multi-agency coalition, including the DEA, Sioux City Police, Homeland Security Investigations, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, and several state and federal partners. The collaboration underscores the federal government’s aggressive stance on drug-related gun crimes in the Midwest.

After completing his prison term, Gomez will face an additional 5 years of supervised release—a tight leash enforced by federal probation officers. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Gomez will serve at least 85% of his sentence before any release consideration.

The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Timmons. Gomez remains in U.S. Marshals custody pending transfer to a federal prison. Case records are filed under 20-CR-4024 in the Northern District of Iowa. For court documents, visit: https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Follow updates @USAO_NDIA.
