April Ferguson, Tribal Embezzlement, South Dakota 2024

PIERRE, SD — April Ferguson and Steven Casto have been handed down severe sentences for their greedy exploitation of the Ideal Lakota Community in South Dakota. The duo was caught in a web of deceit that saw thousands of dollars funneled out of the tribal organization’s coffers.

Ferguson, 46, faced five months behind bars, followed by home confinement and supervised release, while Casto, 41, received two years of probation. Both were ordered to pay substantial restitution to the Ideal Lakota Community, as well as contribute to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The scheme unraveled between March 2020 and June 2021, when Ferguson, serving as chairperson, fraudulently embezzled funds from community accounts. Ferguson’s lover at the time, Casto, was complicit in the theft. They funneled money into their personal accounts for purchases ranging from electronics to groceries.

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell highlighted the gravity of the offense, noting the impact on tribal members whose trust was betrayed by those who were supposed to protect their interests. The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the Guardians Project, a federal initiative aimed at tackling corruption and fraud in Indian country.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case with tenacity, ensuring that justice was served for the Ideal Lakota Community. Ferguson is due to self-surrender on July 15, 2024, marking the end of a sordid chapter in the community’s history.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilant oversight and the consequences faced by those who abuse their positions of trust within tribal communities.
